The reason is simple - the set comes courtesy of Warners who now have access to the vaults of Atlantic, Atco, Loma, Reprise, and the old Warner catalogue. Even the most half-baked Soul fan will know that those labels were responsible for some of the very best of the music that was to be dubbed (rightly or wrongly) "Northern".
Couple that with the fact that the set is compiled by Richard Searling and you have a recipe of success. Mr. S has done the sensible thing and included the well known, the less obvious, the blisteringly Soulful and the throwaway pop that was embraced so lovingly in some quarters."
